Space Weather Dashboard Screenshot – real time tracking of solar winds, x-rays, alerts

When we say that enterprise dashboards are suitable for providing a bird's-eye view of anything in the universe, we need to point out that even the universe itself is fair game for monitoring via a digital dashboard. Thanks to the Red Orbit Space Weather Dashboard, we can monitor in real time, space conditions such as auroral activity, solar wind movements, geomagnetic index changes, x-ray flux, and much more. The neat images are of the sun and the thumbnail graphs link to realtime graphs.

Excel Dashboard for Monitoring the Competitive Landscape

Here is a look at how an excel dashboard can be used to compare the financial ratios of competing companies. It comes from excel dashboard guru, Charley Kyd, who provides sample excel dashboards at his site. This enterprise dashboard provides a graph of a company’s sales and profits and lists the company’s competitors. Various financial ratios are then provided so that the user can perform a competitive analysis. The data is provided via data from live links to an OLAP database of public data from Hoovers.com. The KPI categories include: Operating Ratios, Profitability Ratios, Financial Ratios, Cash Flow Ratios and information on Revenue Growth. Here is the screenshot of the excel dashboard:

Product Performance Dashboard with drill down access to expense approval system

These secret dashboard screenshots are courtesy of a Dashboard Spy deep in a major product company that is very hot on the concept of enterprise dashboards. Excuse the censorship, but you’ll see tracking of YTD product performance: actual vs. budget, market share, daily sales, marketing budget, profit and loss, project expenditures, invoices and expense approvals. The second screenshot shows the drill down into the expense approval and tracking module. Good ideas for layout and content. Enjoy, but let’s keep this between us Dashboard Spies!

Criminal tracking dashboard used by Tom Cruise in Minority Report

Speaking of real-life, physical executive dashboards and scorecards, there’s, of course, the famous “floating interface” used by Tom Cruise in Minority Report. He uses a glove contol to whiz through various dashboards to track down crimes that will occur in the future. Below is a scene from this must-see movie. The gorgeous painting below is by artist Dale Rutter. For a funny cartoon that points out that cool interfaces don’t mean productive work sessions, please see this strip from movie-comics.com. If you haven’t seen this movie, order it here. And if you are really into the idea of this type of interface, see the real-life version of it that they have at NYU. Play the movie on the right panel to see the latest in multi-touch interaction research.

Doctor Employee Scorecard for Healthcare Organizations

Dashboards that feature Employee Scorecards serve enterprises on both strategic and operational levels. At the very top, upper management can make sure that human capital is allocated in such a way as to support corporate-level initiatives. For example if this year’s desired big push in a certain product line is not reflected by the proper levels of staffing and projects, then this misalignment is surely indicative of upcoming disappointment. At the operational levels, employees and their managers can check for themselves their alignment with the stated goals.

The enterprise dashboard screenshot below is from an employee scorecard live demo that is hosted by dashboard vendor idashboards. It’s well worth trying out as there is much interactivity that is coordinated between the various parts of the dashboard. Hovering over a particular section of one of the charts will drive the data in the other views.

The employee scorecard shown here concentrates on the metrics that measure performance of doctors in a healthcare organization such as a hospital or medical practice. The first chart tracks  doctor’s new patients by specialty over time (obviously you want to see whether or not your organization’s growth is proceeding as planned). The next portlet tracks the number of journal articles published (a sign of prestige for your medical institution). Patient satisfaction is tracked as well. Try out the demo to see how user focus is accomodated and drives the user experience.

Note: You have found a unique resource for research into the new field of Enterprise Dashboards. While there is a lot of vendor-provided information out there regarding this exciting new way to present business intelligence, there is a huge scarcity of screenshots of actual enteprise dashboards that have been implemented. As we in the information technology business all know, real world implementations are the most important thing to study. Enjoy the 837 dashboard screenshots you’ll find here in Volume 1 of The Dashboard Spy on Enterprise Dashboards, a blog about real world enteprise dashboard examples.

VOIP Enterprise Dashboard – tracking telecommunications system performance metrics

This is a digital dashboard submission by an Italian Dashboard Spy. Grazie, signore. We have here an enterprise dashboard system for use in a telecommunications company to track performance metrics of a Voice Over IP or VOIP network. The various gauges track the number of calls by various criteria. I’m puzzled as to what the number labels in the metrics mean but that’s simply because of lack of subject matter expertise. I suppose they represent certain telephone lines or groups? Also, what exactly are the “Units” in the Last 5 Minutes of Calls metric? How is volume measured?

Excel 2007 Multi-color Data Bars

Excel 12 (part of the Office 2007 suite) features some very nice business intelligence tools including dashboarding functions. Check out this post describing the new “Data Bar” format http://blogs.msdn.com/excel/archive/2006/02/24/538875.aspx. The idea of a data bar is to have a background that is partially filled and is relative to the other values. As explained: “The Excel 2007 UI allows you to choose whatever colour you want for your data bars, but, by default, all the data bars you apply to a range have to be the same colour.  Someone on our team recently showed me how to use a tiny bit of VBA to simulate having multiple colours of data bars on a range conditionally applied, so I thought I would pass along the trick.”

Default is one color:

The post describes how to get the much desired red/green/yellow effect:

An Executive Console – KPI Dashboard Screenshots showing Financials, Sales, Production, IT System

More fine work here from the BrightPoint Consulting team (brightpointinc.com). This enterprise dashboard is done in Crystal Xcelsius and the interactive flash-based demo can be tried at http://www.xcelsius.com/Examples/swfs/Executive_Dashboard.swf. The screenshots below show that the application focuses on showing 4 views to the business executive – Financial summaries, Sales figures, Production statistics and IT Systems performance indicators. Each area is distilled into an "Index" (i.e. Financial Index, Sales Index, Production Index and IT Systems Index) that provides an At-a-Glance summary that is in view on every page (as well as acts as navigation).

These first 2 enterprise dashboard screenshots show how you can toggle between graphic views and data table views. Indicators include YTD Profit, Stock Price, Cash on Hand, Balance Sheet, Income Statement, Credit and Budget:
